How To Celebrate ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ In Bangkok

If you’re a true Star Wars fan, like me, it’s quite likely that your heart is about to pop out of your chest in anticipation for Episode VII – The Force Awakens.

Although the movie isn’t set to officially release until December 17th in Bangkok, there are several pre-showings on the 16th for the die-hard fans.

Oh, you didn’t know?

Best hurry up and purchase those advance tickets. I got mine at Central World.

But in order to celebrate such a momentous event, simply watching the movie isn’t enough.

After all, some of us have waited over 30 years to see what happened after the Empire was finally destroyed… (or was it?!)

There’s hope left for us yet – here’s the lowdown on the special events happening in Bangkok to help you celebrate the new movie.

Star Wars Warm Up Weekend

Samsen Road

Cinema Winehouse has organized a marathon screening of the first 6 episodes this weekend from Friday till Sunday. This is the perfect time for fans to revisit their favorite (and not-so favorite) scenes in hardcore back-to-back sessions.

They’ll be screening in this order:

Friday 11th – Episodes 1 & 2
Saturday 12th – Episodes 3 & 4
Sunday 13th – Episodes 5 & 6

Never watched Star Wars?

“I find your lack of faith disturbing”

Well don’t (Boba) fret, this is your chance to catch up and experience what all the fuss is all about. After all, you don’t want to see the new movie with no clue as to the rich backstory and heritage.

Chewie, bring on the popcorn!

Dark vs. Light [Beer]

Phloen Chit

Sit back and relax with a couple of beers on Saturday, Dec 12th at the Hair of the Dog’s Imperial vs. Rebel event. Special prices for light and dark beer will be on offer so choose your poison wisely. Anyone brave enough to come in full Star Wars attire can score some discounts.

May The Beats Be With You

may the beats be with you rca live

Royal City Avenue

Live RCA is hosting an all-out Star Wars themed event with 3 music areas on December 19th to celebrate the release.

Area 1 is dubbed as “Enter the Death Star” and will be playing some dark and dirty tech house beats to get all you Sith fans jamming.

Areas 2 is the “Mos Eisley Cantina”, perfect for the scum and villains wanting to get down to some afro beats and live instrumentals.

And just because the Jedis are hard-working and disciplined most of the time doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy a good night. Sip on some imported beer while grooving to disco music in the “Jedi Garden”.

And if all that doesn’t excite you, maybe this will…

The first 100 guests will receive special Star Wars masks!

See you in the queue.

Drink The Dagobah Punch

Rama IX

Fatty’s Bar and Diner are also hosting a special Star Wars party on December 16th with a costume contest, trivia, special drinks, prizes and movies. Who’s coming as Jar Jar Binks?

May The Force Run With You

Siam

“Well, one thing’s for sure, we’re all going to be a lot thinner.”

If you’d rather burn off all those extra Christmas calories than party like a Sith Lord, you can sign up for the Star Wars Run on 26th November at Siam Square.

Tickets are on sale at Thaiticketmajor.com and are priced at 900 Baht, which includes a race pack (t-shirt, tote bag and water bottle).

Dressing up like a Jedi, Chewbacca or Boba Fett is optional but I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of Darth Vaders and Storm Troopers making their way down the 7km route.

Before the race starts, there’ll be a special opening ceremony and concert to get your blood pumping and your Jedi skills ready.

Costumes And Props

Wang Burapha

I’ve been searching high and low all over Bangkok to find suitable Star Wars costumes through Chinatown, Little India and Sampeng before I came across the Mega Plaza mall. They’re selling lightsabers and plastic masks of Vader and Stormtroopers for decent prices.

I came up empty-handed in terms of clothing so decided to make my own Obi Wan costume, buying several meters of cloth at India Emporium. Why don’t you ask your trusted tailor to create something suitable?

Of course, there’s always Toys R Us if you’re happy to spend a little more. And wear a children’s outfit.

Let me know in the comments if you know of a good place to buy Star Wars accessories.

How are you celebrating the imminent release of Episode VII?
