Say Your Goodbyes: Cheap Charlie’s Reportedly Sold To Developers

Everyone’s favourite Soi 11 haunt, Cheap Charlie’s, will reportedly be closed in March 2017 to make way for yet more property development.

Coconuts report that the small parcel of land encompassing the popular dive bar has been bought by a group of foreign investors in a bid to develop another hotel or condominium in the buzzing spot in the Nana neighbourhood.

The lease apparently goes up in March 2017 and the bar will have to close its shutters one last time, in the spot that it has stood in for the past 34 years.

And it’s not only Cheap Charlie’s that will be affected: also on the 1-rai land parcel are the popular restaurants and bars of Stash, Tapas Cafe, The Alchemist, Snapper, Charley Brown’s Mexican Cantina and Moghul Room. In a neighbourhood where glimmering condo developments are seemingly popping up at every corner, this little side-alley is a quirky and fun stalwart of the Sukhumvit nightlife scene.

We’ll be sad to see Cheap Charlie’s go if next March is really the end of the road.

As well as living up to it’s name — it is truly cheap with G&Ts just ฿80 — it’s a reliable spot for some pretty madcap people watching as well as a great spot to meet new friends and acquaintances, being particularly popular with expats and tourists.

Is it a romantic first date location? Not quite. Are you allowed to poop in their lady toilet? Definitely not.

But a great spot for a nightcap it is anyway. RIP Cheap Charlie’s — hopefully you’ll be able to pop up somewhere in a new part of town.
