The Best Coffee on the Sukhumvit Road

Bangkok may be hot but that doesn’t mean caffeine isn’t a priority – hey, that’s what iced coffee’s for, right?

Sukhumvit is home to countless shop fronts, street carts and cosy nooks offering to whip you up a cup of Java but there’s a select group of establishments who are enjoying our routine custom – they’ve got the beans, the atmosphere and (sometimes) the WiFi connection to keep us on the hook.

Here’s our top picks for coffee in Sukhumvit:

Wonderwall

Avora 31 Residence, 28 Sukhumvit Soi 31

07:30 – 19:00 daily

Snuggled in a nook off Soi 31 in prime Phrong Phong territory is Wonderwall The Kaffebar, an arty enclave with friendly staff serving up some of the creamiest coffees on Sukhumvit. A selection of homemade sweet treats are on offer too including some delicious loose leaf teas – we love the vanilla rooibos. A much loved spot of creatives and online wizards, there’s also a covered decking area outside perfect for those after some fresh air.

Kuppa

39 Sukhumvit Soi 16 10:00 – 23:00 daily Kuppa on Soi 16More of a cafe than a specialist coffee shop, Kuppa is a Bangkok institution found on Soi 16 in Asok, serving up their in-house roasted coffee to their brunching clientele. The organic coffee is accompanied by a selection of deliciously sweet treats on offer, such as french toast, pumpkin pie or – the latest morsel to light up Bangkok’s dessert scene – French caneles.

Roast

251 Thonglor 13 Alley, Sukhumvit Soi 55 10:00 – 23:00 daily

We’ve already waxed lyrical on the Emquartier branch’s brunch options, but no ‘Best Coffee on Sukhumvit’ post would be complete without the original Thonglor branch. Roast’s main appeal lies not only in its homely and retro surroundings but in the strength of its single-origin, roasted onsite, coffee beans. Available as both French Press and Espresso, this is undoubtedly one of the best spots to unwind with a cup of Joe in the city – whether it be with brunch, some evening tapas, or on its own for an afternoon wind-down.

Ceresia

Sukhumvit Soi 33/1

Ceresia coffee roasters on Soi 33/1

Blending into its surroundings down Soi 33/1, opposite the Fuji Japanese supermarket, Ceresia is a favourite haunt of many a Bangkokian due to its ever changing, wide array of single origin and blended bouquet coffees on offer from a number of global farms. Homely baked goods and a minimalist, brick work interior make for a spot that takes you away from the madness of Sukhumvit.

Casa Lapin

Sukhumvit Soi 26

07:30 – 22:00 daily

The newest offering in the Casa Lapin chain is located halfway down Soi 26 in Phrom Phong and it shares its site with a flower shop, hostel and co-working space, making this a spot for hard-working creatives to refuel. A wide array of coffees and beans are on offer together with some interesting teas (check out the pomegranate and grape, above), niche beers and ciders, baked goodies and cafe-style meals. A larger and airier space than most of the spots on this list, Casa Lapin is an easy spot to while away the hours in.

Serendib

120/24 Sukhumvit Soi 23

Serendib Team Room

Here’s an entry that’s a little left field – not strictly a coffee shop, but a Japanese tea room. We don’t like to neglect our tea-loving readers! The science behind Serendib is enough to propel it onto this list as they brew each tea to taste by modifying the hardness of the water and straining the tea itself prior to serving. The Japanese chef of this Soi 23 enclave also bakes up delicious desserts for you to indulge in too.
