A Midsummer Night’s Dream In Bangkok

Shakespeare’s favourite comedy is coming to Bangkok.

This March and April will see a stripped down and intimate production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by members of Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT).

Tickets are on sale now and are expected to sell out quickly, as only 60 seats are available for each performance.

Just eight actors will take on the myriad of roles within the play, with all playing at least two characters each. Perennial Shakespeare favourites Puck and Bottom will of course be joining the fray!

The play will be performed ‘in the round’, allowing the audience to get a full 360° view of the proceedings before them.

One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. Four young Athenian lovers and a group of five amateur actors all set off for the forest.

There, Oberon, the King of the fairies and his assistant Puck, use their magic to manipulate the lovers with mischievous and hilarious results.

Bottom, one of the actors, also has a surprising transformation which endears him to the Fairy Queen.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is also one of the most quote-rich plays in history, containing such lines as

The course of true love never did run smooth

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind

Though she be but little, she is fierce!

And yet, to say the truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays

BCT will be performing at BNH Hospital on Soi Convent in Silom for all 6 nights. And, before you start to wonder — in the large, third floor conference room rather than a hospital ward!

Check the event page on Facebook to be kept up to date with performance details and some ‘behind the scenes’ access.

The cast have already filmed a video blog and uploaded some photos of their rehearsals.
