Monkey Trapped In A Bangkok Hellhole For 25 Years Is Rescued

The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) has seen some pretty awful cases of neglect and animal suffering since its inception in 2001, but the recent case of Joe the macaque was one of the worst they’d ever recorded.

“I have seen a lot of animal suffering in the last 17 years, but I would say that the condition the monkey was kept in was probably in the “top 10″ of most horrible cases, and when the owner told us how long he had been in there, I was absolutely shocked!” said Edwin Wiek, founder of the WFFT, in a statement.

Joe was found living between two buildings in a filthy, 70x80x80 centimetre cage in a Bangkok slum.

Shamefully, he had been kept there without a water supply, overrun with rats and his own dirt, since 1991 – 25 years.

The WFFT learned about Joe’s plight after receiving a phone call from a foreigner living in Bangkok who had spotted the monkey and his repugnant living conditions, concerned for his welfare. The man was able to take Edwin and the WFFT team to where Joe was trapped, and they quickly agreed with Joe’s owner that he could be rescued and taken to the foundation’s quarantine unit in Petchburi.

Joe’s “home” for the past 25 years

Apparently Joe had come to the attention of another authority some years ago; his owner told the WFFT that Bangkok Zoo had offered to rehome and care for him at the zoo under the proviso that the owner pay US$100 a month towards his welfare. The owner, living in the slum too, presumably couldn’t afford these terms and Joe was forgotten once again.

Joe was found dirty and weak with almost no muscle tissue; unable to walk or climb as his ‘home’ had been so incredibly cramped. He was also dehydrated and suffering with dental problems. Although he is still weak, happily he has been seen to make some progress since his rescue, starting to move around his new cage, taking baths and communicating with other monkeys at the unit.

“His life expectancy is up to 35 years and we hope he will still have some quality years ahead at our sanctuary,” commented Edwin.

Understandably, Edwin has mixed emotions about the rescue. Speaking about the day of the rescue, he wrote, “I felt embarrassed to be a human being, seeing what humans again and again do to animals, but at the same time I was feeling proud to be a human, being able to make a positive difference in this horrible case.”

Recognising the widespread issues facing the wildlife and pet trade in Asia, he finished with a note of caution: “I am afraid there are more cases to come.”
